October 4, 2012 marks the 81st celebration of World Animal Day. This celebration originated in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists. October 4 was selected for the event to coincide with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi of the Roman Catholic Church who is known worldwide as a nature and animal lover.

During this day, animal lovers all around the world celebrate the life of all forms of living things. Special events, such as animal blessings in churches, fundraising events and open days, informational displays and other animal-related activities are planned in different locations all around the globe.
